Which Squirrel Is In My Backyard?

Canada is home to over 22 types of squirrels! People often see squirrels as adorable creatures and enjoy watching their antics in the garden. But these bushy-tailed creatures can also be quite mischievous on our properties; they seem to have a way of getting into our gardens, destroying crops, and monopolizing the bird feeders.

Let's look at what types of squirrels live in Manitoba and how to identify them. This will allow you to be better prepared to prevent and handle squirrel problems.

Types Of Squirrels In Manitoba

Eastern Grey Squirrels

The eastern grey squirrel is one of Canada's most common squirrel species. Even though they are named the grey squirrel, they can be grey or black. This is simply a tiny genetic difference that causes the colour change. (In Manitoba, they are grey but in Ontario, many are black). Eastern grey squirrels are known for being intent on fighting for backyard bird feeders; they love eating sunflower seeds, corn, and peanuts. To deter them, purchase one of many bird feeders designed to deter squirrels.

Fox Squirrels

Fox squirrels are the largest tree squirrels in Manitoba. They can adapt to various environments and enjoy foraging in forests for acorns, hazelnuts, and black walnuts. They mostly live in forests but can become pests on bird feeders, too; they are skilled climbers and jumpers, able to jump roughly 3 metres / 10 feet.

American Red Squirrels

The American red squirrel is similar to the eastern grey squirrel in that they are both tree dwellers, but the American red squirrel is significantly smaller in size. You can identify them by their distinct red fur colour and white bellies. American red squirrels are known to enjoy seeds but also like bird eggs and berries. They are tough to keep out of bird feeders due to their small size, and in the winter, like the eastern grey squirrels, they may see your garage or attic as a good home.

Northern Flying Squirrels

The northern flying squirrel is not as common in Manitoba but can be found in forests with lots of conifer trees. It is nocturnal, has light brown fur, and is much less furry than the eastern grey squirrel and American red squirrel. These squirrels eat nuts and acorns, but mushrooms are their core diet. They don't gather food and store it for the winter because they don't hibernate.

How Do Squirrels Survive During Winter?

Some squirrels, like ground squirrels and marmots, hibernate through the winter but eastern grey squirrels and red squirrels generally stay active year-round. They look for spaces to nest in the winter, such as chimneys, attics, or wall cavities.

Risks Squirrels Pose To Your Property

Squirrels can cause problems in your backyard and on the bird feeder, but they are definitely known for damaging homes. They can chew holes through buildings to get indoors. Once inside, they eat through wires and woodwork, creating fire hazards and structural issues.
