Why Grain Silo Fumigation Is Essential

The Canadian Grain Commission, which administers the Canada Grain Act, states that licensed grain handling facilities cannot receive or ship grain that is contaminated or infested, and that producers cannot deliver grain that is contaminated or infested. Our Grain Fumigation Process

We use a variety of pest control techniques to address grain silo infestations. The primary technique we employ is fumigation, typically with phosphine gas released from aluminum phosphide pellets. Our approach ensures a complete eradication of the infestation without compromising the health of our staff or yours.

1. We inspect the silo for leakage points, then seal off leaks and access points to ensure that the fumigant gas does not escape.
2. We verify the temperature and moisture of the grain and adjust our fumigant use accordingly.
3. We place fumigant pellets into the silo using methods that reduce our exposure to the pellets.
4. The tablets are left for up to a week to ensure the entire silo is fumigated.
5. The silo is fully ventilated to remove all of the fumigant gas.
6. Gas levels are tested using gas detectors until they are below regulatory thresholds, ensuring that the grain is safe to handle and deliver for storage or processing.

This multistep process ensures that infestations are completely eliminated. Fumigation is not the only process available, however; rusty grain beetles, for example, may be exterminated through the use of ventilation in the wintertime, as they have a low tolerance to cold temperatures.
