Granary or grain weevils (Sitophilus granarius) are small, reddish-brown or dark-brown beetles less than 5 mm in length. Frequently found in sheds and warehouses where grain is stored (hence their name), they can also infest pantries and kitchens, bulk food storage areas, baking or food processing facilities, grocery stores, and other locations where dried or packaged foods - such as whole grains, cake mixes, cereals, cookies, and more - are readily available.
Discovering evidence of adult grain weevils or larvae near your stored grain or food is always an unpleasant surprise. Fortunately, the team at Gilles Lambert Pest Control is well-equipped to eradicate grain weevil infestations and is always available to help you regain control. Contact us today to learn more!

Grain weevils are often confused with other types of beetles that also infest stored grains, including rice weevils and flour beetles. Adult granary weevils are 3 to 5 mm in length with shiny reddish-brown or dark brown colouration. They have a smooth, oval body with a slightly rounded back, a long, curved snout, and short, curved antennae located near the head. Unlike some other grain beetles, grain weevils do not have fully developed wings and cannot fly. They are commonly found in stored grains such as wheat, barley, and oats.
Granary weevil larvae are 3 to 4 mm long and creamy white in colour. They have a soft, worm-like appearance and are typically found inside grain kernels.
Granary weevil eggs are white or cream-coloured and only about 1 mm in size. They're often laid inside grain kernels, making them difficult to spot in most cases.
Grain weevils typically mate near a food source, such as stored grain. The female bores small holes into grain kernels in order to lay her eggs, depositing hundreds of them throughout her lifetime. The eggs hatch in 3 to 7 days, after which the larvae feed on the interior of the grain kernels. Once the larvae are fully grown and have pupated, they exit the grain kernels through small holes and emerge as adult weevils.
