Silverfish Infestation & Control

Silverfish may not be harmful insects, but most people agree that they don’t want these pests in their homes. These creepy crawlers are attracted to moisture and fibres that they can snack on, so it can be a real challenge to keep them away. If you’ve noticed some of these silverfish around your home, you need to know what brought them in and how you can eliminate them at the source!

What Brings Silverfish Inside?

Often, you’ll find silverfish in their natural habitat: Moist areas that are not disturbed. In nature, you’ll encounter them under fallen trees, beneath rocks, and in a large pile of leaves. However, this isn’t the only time that you’ll come in contact with silverfish; they also exist in homes, especially when there are lots of yummy things for them to snack on.

Silverfish love to eat things like fibres, sugars, grains, and other types of dry goods. The truth is that these insects are pretty indiscriminate in their eating habits. Most of them are as satisfied with pet food as they are with flour or sugar. You may find them in your kitchen, but they’ll also take up residence behind your furniture, near water sources like sinks, and/or in the basement.

If you find that your home has been taken over by a silverfish infestation, you will likely need professional help to eliminate them completely.

How To Control Silverfish

Are you concerned that you might have an infestation, but you can’t seem to find the little bugs? You can try tricks like wetting down newspaper and leaving it in areas where you think the silverfish might be. If you do have an infestation, they are likely to be attracted to the water as well as the paper fibres for a snack.

Controlling an infestation can be a bit tricky, and you’ll want to contact an exterminator. They can help you set out sticky traps that will draw silverfish in, making it easy to dispose of them in a few days. You may need to do this several times to gather all of the silverfish in a given area.

Some people may prefer a “less sticky” approach to controlling silverfish. You can sprinkle a bit of Borax or diatomaceous earth in the areas where you find these insects. A thin layer of either substance is all it takes. Popular places to spread this include behind cabinets, along baseboards, and under your kitchen appliances. Of course, this is perhaps the messiest method of eliminating silverfish.

If you want to get rid of them quickly and entirely, the best thing to do is contact a pest control service.
