4 Ways To Keep Wasps Away From You & Your Home

Is there anything worse than trying to enjoy your backyard and being swarmed with wasps? Besides being loud pests, these insects also have a painful sting that can leave you scrambling to get away from them. Fortunately, there are a few simple solutions to your wasp problem. Some of them can even be done with ingredients you probably have on hand.

If you’re ready to keep wasps away from you and your home this summer and autumn, you need to be sure to read this guide!

Soapy Water

The first and easiest way to nip a thriving hive of wasps is to spray it down with soap and water. In an empty spray bottle, add about two tablespoons of dish soap and fill the rest with water. Once you have your solution ready, get prepared to spray the hot spots around your home. If you know of any nests hanging from the eaves, spray them down thoroughly with your soapy water. It will clog the nest’s breathing pores and kill the wasps relatively quickly.

Sliced Cucumber

If your primary goal is to keep wasps away from a party, you can deter them with a few slices of cucumber placed strategically around the area. Cucumber has a somewhat acidic property that is abhorrent to wasps. Place it on an aluminum tray, and you’ll produce a chemical scent that is unappealing to wasps without being bothersome to you. As a result, they will steer clear of you and your backyard barbecue as long as those cucumber slices stay fresh.

Plant Some Mint

Some people have a serious problem with wasps developing hives near their home. The good news is that you can use plants to keep them away. Peppermint is known to repel wasps from an area. You can use it to your advantage in a couple of ways. You can spritz the nest with soapy water and a few drops of peppermint essential oil.

Alternatively, you could plant a few peppermint plants around your yard. You’ll get a tasty herb to use in your mojitos and the wasps will stay far away. It’s a win-win situation for you!

Seal Your Garbage Containers

One of the main things that attracts these loud pests is the smell of garbage. They are often worse around homes that have a lot of exposed trash in their receptacles. Composting can also bring a healthy swarm of wasps to your yard. Do your best to seal up your trash cans and cover your compost pile

Getting Rid Of Wasps

Getting rid of wasps doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few strategic moves, you can practically eliminate their presence in your yard altogether. Consider taking on a few of the simple tricks above next time you plan to host a party in your backyard.
